What Are the SRA Transparency Rules?

The SRA Transparency Rules require regulated law firms to publish specific information on their websites to help consumers make informed choices about legal services. These rules apply to all firms regulated by the SRA.

Who Must Comply?

The rules apply to all firms that provide services in one or more of the following areas:

Required Website Information

Pricing Information

Total cost of services including VAT, disbursements, and conditional fee arrangements

Service Description

Clear explanation of what services are included in the price

Key Stages & Timescales

Typical duration and main stages of the matter

Complaints Procedure

How to complain and reference to the Legal Ombudsman

Regulatory Status

Confirmation of SRA regulation and SRA number

Professional Indemnity

Information about your PII cover

Price Transparency Requirements

For each service area, you must publish:

  • Total costs for the service, or basis for charges
  • VAT amounts where applicable
  • Disbursements and third-party costs
  • Whether costs are fixed or estimated
  • Factors that might change the cost
  • Conditional fee arrangements if offered

Staff Qualifications

You must publish information about those who work on client matters, including:

  • Qualifications and experience of the individuals
  • Who will supervise the work
  • Relevant accreditations (CQS, Lexcel, etc.)

Complaints Information

Every law firm website must include:

  • Your internal complaints procedure
  • How and when clients can complain to the Legal Ombudsman
  • Legal Ombudsman contact details
  • Time limits for making complaints
